What is the NFL’s new Overtime Rule—and why does it matter?
In football, if both teams are tied at the end of the 4th quarter, the game goes into overtime (OT)—an extra period to decide the winner.

In the past, the team who got the ball first in OT could win the game immediately by scoring a touchdown. That often felt unfair—especially if the other team’s offense never got a chance to respond.

🚨 New Rule in 2025:
Now, both teams are guaranteed one possession, no matter what happens. Even if the first team scores a touchdown, the other team still gets the ball to try and match or beat the score.

If the game is still tied after both possessions, it becomes sudden death (first team to score wins).

🛠️ NFL Example:
Imagine it is Chiefs vs. Bills and it’s tied 27–27 at the end of the 4th Quarter.

  • The Chiefs win the OT coin toss and score a touchdown.

  • Under the old rule, game over. Bills never touch the ball.

  • Under the new rule, the Bills get the ball too. If they also score a touchdown, the game continues. If they don’t, Chiefs win.

This rule makes games feel more fair—especially in big moments when two great quarterbacks are dueling it out (like Mahomes vs. Allen).
