Kansas City is looking to bounce back after a hard-fought 31-28 loss to Jacksonville on Monday night, while Detroit rolls into Arrowhead riding a four-game win streak — powered by the league’s top-scoring offense and a relentless defensive front.

The Chiefs enter Sunday night in better health than they’ve been in weeks. Wide receiver Xavier Worthy (shoulder/ankle) returned to full practice Friday and has no game designation — a massive boost for Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City offense.
Defensive tackle Omarr Norman-Lott (shoulder) and cornerback Kristian Fulton (ankle) are also expected to return to the lineup.

For Detroit, however, the injury list is far more concerning. The Lions ruled out LT Taylor Decker (shoulder), backup OT Giovanni Manu (knee), and CB Avonte Maddox (hamstring) on Saturday. Starting corners Terrion Arnold (shoulder) and D.J. Reed (hamstring) are already sidelined, leaving Detroit dangerously thin in the secondary.
Safeties Kerby Joseph (knee) and Brian Branch (ankle) are listed as questionable and could be game-time decisions — potentially giving Mahomes plenty of mismatches to exploit.

The Lions have built their identity around balance and power — and it starts on the ground. Detroit ranks No. 1 in scoring (34.8 PPG) and No. 7 in rushing (134.8 YPG), thanks to the two-headed attack of Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery, who have combined for over 630 yards already.

If Kansas City wants to slow down the league’s hottest offense, it begins with winning at the line of scrimmage. The Chiefs have allowed 100+ rushing yards in four straight games and rank 26th in yards allowed per carry (4.78). That must change tonight.

Patrick Mahomes enters Sunday night averaging 261 passing yards per game and leads all quarterbacks in rushing for the Chiefs. Across the field, Jared Goff is playing arguably the best football of his career — first in completion percentage (75.2%) and passing touchdowns (12).

Kansas City’s pass defense, ranked 7th in the NFL, will face its biggest test of the year against Goff and playmakers Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, and Sam LaPorta. The Chiefs’ defensive line — led by Chris Jones and George Karlaftis — will be tasked with forcing Goff off his rhythm before he can find his rhythm on early downs.

The Lions rank second in the NFL in sacks (16) and are anchored by Aidan Hutchinson, who’s tied for the league lead in pressures (31) and has recorded a sack in four straight games.
The good news for Kansas City: the offensive line played one of its best games of the season last week, giving Mahomes time to connect with Kelce, Hollywood Brown, and Tyquan Thornton.

Still, expect Detroit to dial up heavy pressure early. Mahomes’ ability to extend plays and move the pocket — while staying disciplined against Hutchinson’s pursuit — will be key to keeping drives alive.

The Lions are 19-0 when winning the turnover margin since the start of last season — and only 5-6 when they lose it.
That stat alone should underline Kansas City’s top priority: protect the football. Costly penalties and a red-zone interception defined last week’s loss in Jacksonville. If the Chiefs can clean those up, they’ll be in position to hand Detroit its first road loss of the year.

The Lions’ plan will be to control the tempo and keep Mahomes watching from the sideline. Expect a heavy workload for Gibbs as Detroit leans on the run early and often. He’s shared touches with Montgomery all season, but game flow should push him north of 15 carries.

Worthy’s chemistry with Mahomes has been evident since his return — drawing 17 targets in two games. The Chiefs need explosive plays, and Worthy’s short-area quickness and deep-ball threat make him the focal point of Kansas City’s aerial attack tonight.

After posting 92 yards last week, LaPorta’s line is inflated. The Chiefs’ defense has allowed the third-fewest yards to opposing tight ends this season. Expect Spagnuolo’s scheme to limit LaPorta with bracket coverage and physical play underneath.

Pacheco’s receiving usage continues to rise — six targets and six catches over the past two games. Kansas City’s screen game and quick check-downs to the running backs will be vital against Detroit’s aggressive front.

Detroit’s defensive stats have been boosted by facing backup quarterbacks, but Lamar Jackson carved them for 288 yards and three TDs in Week 3. With the Lions’ secondary ravaged by injuries, Mahomes should find room to air it out in prime time.

This one has everything you could ask for in a Sunday night matchup — elite quarterbacks, top-tier defenses, and postseason implications in early October.
